Christmas Gift Exchange #2

christmasgiftgrey.jpgMaterials
A gift from each participant

There are many different variations of the gift exchange at Christmas. This is merely one of them.

How gifts are exchanged:

A. Multiply the number of players by 2 or 3 depending on how large the group is and how many opportunities each person will be able to choose a gift. (Example: 10 players X 2 chances each = 20 numbers) Numbers 1 through 20 are placed in a bowl and each player takes two numbers from the bowl.

B. This determines each person’s turn to choose a gift. First #1, then #2, then #3 and so on. A player may get consecutive numbers(10, 11) or inconsecutive numbers(2, 35). All players take one turn for each number, and all players go in the order of the numbers they have picked.

C. #1 picks a present from the pile. Players choose a gift based only on the look, feel, and sound of the package. None of the gifts are opened until the game is over.

D. #2 has a choice of taking what #1 has or picking a present from the pile. Every person has to choose between taking a present from the pile or from someone else. A person can take a present from anyone that has a present, but may not take the last present from someone that has no more numbers.

E. At various times people may have several presents at the same time. That is OK. As the game continues, other people will take all of those presents away except for the last one.

F. If someone takes a present, the person who lost the present must wait until his next number comes up to get another present.

Typically, there will be lots of plotting and scheming for what people think are the best presents.

It is OK for the person that bought the present to warn a player, one time, if they think that that person really would not like the present they are taking out of the pile. Don’t tell them what it is, just warn them that they may not like it.

Wrap up? Unwrapping
None of the presents are opened until the entire game is over. Only after all of the present swapping is over, and everyone has had their turn, are any presents opened. Every player must have one present at the end of the

Christmas Quotes – A Christmas Heart

“The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be that his head wasn’t screwed on quite right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.”
– Dr. Suess

“Christmas is for children. But it is for grownups too. Even if it is a headache, a chore, and nightmare, it is a period of necessary defrosting of chill and hide-bound hearts.”
– Lenora Mattingly Weber

“It is not even the beginning of Christmas unless it is Christmas in the heart.”
– Richard Roberts

“Remember, if Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won’t find it under a tree.”
– Charlotte Carpenter

“It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.”
– W. T. Ellis

“Mankind is a great, an immense family. This is proved by what we feel in our hearts at Christmas.”
– Pope John XXIII

“The only real blind person at Christmas-time is he who has no Christmas in his heart.”
– Helen Keller

“Christmas Eve was a night of song that wrapped itself about you like a shawl. But it warmed more than your body. It warmed your heart…filled it, too, with melody that would last forever.”
– Bess Streeter Aldrich

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
– Charles Dickens, Ebeneezer Scrooge, A Christmas Carol

“They err who thinks Santa Claus comes down through the chimney; he really enters through the heart.”
– Mrs. Paul M. Ell

“Until one feels the spirit of Christmas, there is no Christmas. All else is outward display-so much tinsel and decorations. For it isn’t the holly, it isn’t the snow. It isn’t the tree not the firelight’s glow. It’s the warmth that comes to the hearts of men when the Christmas spirit returns again.”
— Anonymous

“Christmas is not in tinsel and lights and outward show. The secret lies in an inner glow. It’s lighting a fire inside the heart. Good will and joy a vital part. It’s higher thought and a greater plan. It’s glorious dream in the soul of man.”
– Wilfred A. Peterson (The Art of Living)

“This is Christmas: not the tinsel, not the giving and receiving, not even the carols, but the humble heart that receives anew the wondrous gift, the Christ.”
— Frank McKibben

“Christmas … is not an eternal event at all, but a piece of one’s home that one carries in one’s heart…”
– Freya Stark

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”
– Calvin Coolidge

“There is no ideal Christmas; only the one Christmas you decide to make as a reflection of your values, desires, affections, traditions.”
– Bill McKibben

Exmas

… and beyond this there lies in the ocean, turned towards the west and the north, the island of Niatirb which Hecataeus indeed declares to be the same size and shape as Sicily, but it is larger, and though in calling it triangular a man would not miss the mark. It is densely inhabited by men who wear clothes not very different from other barbarians who occupy the north- western parts of Europe though they do not agree with them in language. These islanders, surpassing all the men of whom we know in patience and endurance, use the following customs.

In the middle of winter when fogs and rains most abound they have a great festival which they call Exmas , and for fifty days they prepare for it in the fashion I shall describe. First of all, every citizen is obliged to send to each of his friends and relations a square piece of hard paper stamped with a picture, which in their speech is called an Exmas-card . But the pictures represent birds sitting on branches, or trees with a dark green prickly leaf, or else men in such garments as the Niatirbians believe that their ancestors wore two hundred years ago riding in coaches such as their ancestors used, or houses with snow on their roofs. And the Niatirbians are unwilling to say what these pictures have to do with the festival, guarding (as I suppose) some sacred mystery. And because all men must send these cards the market-place is filled with the crowd of those buying them, so that there is great labour and weariness.

But having bought as many as they suppose to be sufficient, they return to their houses and find there the like cards which others have sent to them. And when they find cards from any to whom they also have sent cards, they throw them away and give thanks to the gods that this labour at least is over for another year. But when they find cards from any to whom they have not sent, then they beat their breasts and wail and utter curses against the sender; and, having sufficiently lamented their misfortune, they put on their boots again and go out into the fog and rain and buy a card for him also. And let this account suffice about Exmas-cards.

They also send gifts to one another, suffering the same things about the gifts as about the cards, or even worse. For every citizen has to guess the value of the gift which every friend will send to him so that he may send one of equal value, whether he can afford it or not. And they buy as gifts for one another such things as no man ever bought for himself. For the sellers, understanding the custom, put forth all kinds of trumpery, and whatever, being useless and ridiculous, sell as an Exmas gift. And though the Niatirbians profess themselves to lack sufficient necessary things, such as metal, leather, wood and paper, yet an incredible quantity of these things is wasted every year, being made into the gifts.

But during these fifty days the oldest, poorest and the most miserable of citizens put on false beards and red robes and walk in the market-place; being disguised (in my opinion) as Cronos. And the sellers of gifts no less than the purchasers become pale and weary, because of the crowds and the fog, so that any man who came into a Niatirbian city at this season would think that some great calamity had fallen on Niatirb. This fifty days of preparation is called in their barbarian speech the Exmas Rush .

But when the day of the festival comes, then most of the citizens, being exhausted with the Rush , lie in bed till noon. But in the evening they eat five times as much supper as on other days and, crowning themselves with crowns of paper, they become intoxicated. And on the day after Exmas they are very grave, being internally disordered by the supper and the drinking and reckoning how much they have spent on gifts and on the wine. For wine is so dear among the Niatirbians that a man must swallow the worth of a talent before he is well intoxicated.

Such, then, are their customs about the Exmas. But the few among the Niatirbians have also a festival, separate and to themselves, called Crissmas , which is on the same day as Exmas. And those who keep Crissmas, doing the opposite to the majority of the Niatirbians, rise early on that day with shining faces and go before sunrise to certain temples where they partake of a sacred feast. And in most of the temples they set out images of a fair woman with a new-born Child on her knees and certain animals and shepherds adoring the Child. (The reason of these images is given in a certain sacred story which I know but do not repeat.)

But I myself conversed with a priest in one of these temples and asked him why they kept Crissmas on the same day as Exmas; for it appeared to me inconvenient. But the priest replied, “It is not lawful, O Stranger, for us to change the date of Crissmas, but would that Zeus would put it into the minds of the Niatirbians to keep Exmas at some other time or not to keep it at all. For Exmas and the Rush distract the minds even of the few from sacred things. And we indeed are glad that men should make merry at Crissmas; but in Exmas there is no merriment left.”

And when I asked him why they endured the Rush, he replied, “It is, O Stranger, a racket, using (as I suppose) the words of some oracle and speaking unintelligibly to me (for a racket is an instrument which the barbarians use in a game called tennis ).

But what Hecataeus says, that Exmas and Crissmas are the same, is not credible. For the first, the pictures which are stamped on the Exmas-cards have nothing to do with the sacred story which the priests tell about Crissmas. And secondly, the most part of the Niatirbians, not believing the religion of the few, nevertheless send the gifts and cards and participate in the Rush and drink, wearing paper caps. But it is not likely that men, even being barbarians, should suffer so many and great things in honour of a god they do not believe in. And now, enough about Niatirb.

Pass the Orange (Christmas Variation)

Introduction
This is a classic game that has been around for ages. The key prop for this game is an orange. Oranges, along with apples, nuts, and other fruits were the original Christmas Tree Ornaments. For many families, an orange in the Christmas stocking is still an important Christmas tradition. Oranges are also a common treat in Asia, especially around Chinese New Year when they represent prosperity for the New Year.

Game Description
Participants must pass an orange down a line of participants using only their chins.

Game Materials
A single orange for each team… you might want to have a few extra for eating afterward!

Game Preparation
None

Game Play

  1. Divide the group into teams of about 5-10 persons of an almost equal guy-girl ratio. There can be an extra guy or girl for odd numbered teams.
  2. Teams must stand in line, one behind the other (arranged boy, girl, boy,… or girl, boy.girl…).
  3. Give the person at the front of each team an orange which he or shee must tuck under his/ her chin.
  4. The orange must be passed to the next person, using only the chins. The use of hands is strictly forbidden.
  5. When the orange gets to the last person, they must run to the front of the line (without dropping the orange) to win!

  • Add a little more life by requiring participants to sing loudly for their verse and the mention of the gift in the chorus.

Take it to the Next Level
Like many Christian traditions, the secular is often mingled with the spiritual. Sometimes meanings are lost. Sometimes the meaning is revised as we get further and further away from the historical events that inspired them. While Christmas and December 25th is almost certainly NOT the actual date of Christ’s birth, it is an opportunity to celebrate the fact that Christ the Savior was sent to us more than 2000 years ago. God came down, and because of his birth, death, and resurrection our lives are forever changed. Because of his birth and what he did, we can be born again. God became flesh and suffered on the cross that we might receive a new birth and be reconciled with God. It doesn’t matter when you were born, you can be born again today if you will accept Christ into your heart.

To Note
Contrary to some stories circulating around the internet, the song is very unlikley to be a symbol or metaphor for he basic tenets of the Christian faith. Click here for for details.

Obstacles to Prayer Groups

Fear
One of the number one fears that people have is the fear of public speaking. While prayer is communication with God, if there are other people listening and it is a corporate prayer meeting, people are similarly afraid of prayer. This fear can be somewhat alleviated if we provide training for those that will lead prayer, and avoid putting people on the spot to pray without prior notice and training. Stress that prayer is communication with God. It is talking to God. Also stress that in private, you can pray to God in whatever way most comfortable for you, but in corporate prayer it is best to do it in such a way that you benefit those listening in on your prayers with God.

Communication Issues
Prayer is communication, and like every other form of communication it only develops with training and experience. Many people have not developed the skill of communicating verbally with God so they may tend to repeat prayers and phrases they have heard — simply stringing together prayers they often hear. The best way to overcome this is to provide specific guidance for prayer items.

Unrealistic Expectations
Many people think that they will be considered less spiritual if their prayers are not on the level of the pastor or other church leaders. We need to stress in training that God is more concerned with our heart than how polished our prayer sounds.

Violation of confidences
Sometimes it can become a fine line between honestly praying for someone in need and turning the prayer request into little more than gossip sessions or finger pointing sessions. We need to pray for so and so because he did such and such…. Keep confidences and private prayer requests private. Make sure that even in prayer that everything we say is edifying to those who are listening. (Ephesians 4:29)

Planning issues
Many prayer meetings lack variety and become boring and routine. Vary the format and introduce a variety of concepts, styles, and vary the focus to add a little life to meetings that have become stale.

Height of a Building

A young boy was touted as the next Einstein. One of the world’s greatest thinkers was brought in to test him to see how smart he really was… They set him down and gave him an exam. On the exam there was ONE question alone…

“Using a barometer, how would you determine the height of a building?”

The boy read the question, quickly wrote an answer and turned it in to the examiner. The examiner was quite surprised the young boy finished so quickly.. He read the answer.

“I would tie a sting to the barometer, lower it until it touches the ground, and then measure the string to determine the height of the building.”

The examiner said, “While that would work, that is not the answer I am looking for. Please try again..”

The boy went back to his desk.. He was troubled.. he was scratching his head and in such concentration that the examiner thought to ask him if he was OK… if he needed some help. Was he having difficulty coming up with an answer?

The boy replied, “oh no… that’s not my trouble… I have so many good answers I cannot decide which one to write down.”

Eventually the boy wrote down a formula involving barometric pressure to calculate the height above sea level and determine the building’s height.

The examiner was satisfied with the answer, but was also curious… “Do you mind telling me what some of your other answers were?”

The boy replied:

“I could measure the length of the barometer and then use it to mark the wall in the stairwell. When I reached the top I would multiply the marks on the wall by the length of the barometer and would be able to calculate the height of the building.”

“Or I could drop it from the top of the building and use a stop watch to time the fall. I could then use the formula for gravity and acceleration to determine the height of the building.”

“Or I could get up early and as the sun rises, measure the shadow cast by the barometer and the shadow cast by the building and using a simple ratio, determine the height of the building according to proportion.”

The boy continued with several more ideas.. Eventually the examiner asked him, “What was your favorite solution?”

The boy replied, “I would go to the guardhouse and show the barometer to the guard. I would tell him how this was such a wonderful barometer and all the wonderful things it could do for him.. I would then tell him… If you will only tell me the height of this building I will give you this barometer for free”

There are many solutions to a problem… Sometimes we are so intent on elaborate strategies and methods to solve a problem that we forget the simple things… Maybe we should just ask…

Are you bringing your problems to God?
