The Cave

An adventurous youth was hiking through the German forest when he saw a dark opening in a cliff indicating a deep cave. With the excitement of adventure, the youth decided to go exploring. He carefully made his way into the opening and not too far from the entrance, he saw a flickering light in the passage far ahead. A typical teenager, ever curious, he had to see what was inside the cave.

As he rounded a corner in the passage the youth was surprised to find a very old man with a large stack of music scores in front of him. The old man was rubbing the musical notes off of the paper and tossing the blank sheets aside.

The youth was astonished when he recognized the old man as Mozart. He’d seen pictures of Mozart in his music class and even a bronze statue of the man. But it couldn’t be. Mozart was dead. After watching for a couple more minutes he pointedly asked, “I know it’s impossible, but are you Mozart?”

The old man slowly looked up and and with lifeless eyes replied, “Yes, I am Mozart”,

The astonished youth had to clarify “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?”

Again the reply was “Yes, I am he.”

“But, you’ve been dead for centuries. What are you doing sitting here rubbing notes off of the sheet music?” the youth asked.

Then old man looked up with an intent gaze and said,
“Decomposing!”

——

Take it to the Next Level
ARGH! I know – a very BAD Joke. But as a New Year begins I wonder if it reflects the life of many youth today. Is their life moving toward the creation of a “Masterpiece” in the Master’s Hand, or is life slowly decomposing – falling apart as they are tossed aside. Blank stares staring back from a forest of people around us. Blank Sheets of paper tossed aside and hidden from view. Last year might have been a masterpiece or a failure. But every day is blank piece of paper and it is up to us whether we will compose a masterpiece, or sit decomposing. Instead of trying to erase the past, create a fantastic future.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

“…Each man’s work will become evident” and the quality of each man’s work will be tested. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

Christmas Caroling

Merry Christmas! I really want to thank you for being part of my Creative Youth Ideas family. It really fills my heart with joy to read your emails and how I’ve been a blessing and a part of helping you in your ministry.

Personally, I’ll be spending Christmas with my family and friends from church. Being the musical one in the group, I was asked to put together some Christmas carols to sing during the holidays. Took me a while but I put together a pretty comprehensive list of Christmas Carols and Christmas themed songs. I thought I’d go a step further and put them into song sheets.

I thought since I’ve already spent the time to get that done, and again to thank you for being a part of my extended family in Christ, I figured I’d share these Christmas Carol Song Sheets with you. You can download them here:

Christmas Carol Songsheets

They’re in full color and you can download and print them out for your youth groups and family to use as you celebrate this joyous season with the people you love.

Here’s wishing you a joyous Christmas and a blessed New Year!

With YOUth on my Heart,
Ken & Josh

Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! the herald angels sing,

With Heart and Hand and Voices

Martin Rinkert was a minister in the little town of Eilenburg in Germany some 350 years ago. He was the son of a poor coppersmith, but somehow, he managed to work his way through an education.

Finally, in the year 1617, he was offered the post of Archdeacon in his hometown parish. A year later, what has come to be known as the Thirty-Years-War broke out. His town was caught right in the middle. In 1637, the massive plague that swept across the continent hit Eilenburg… people died at the rate of fifty a day and the man called upon to bury most of them was Martin Rinkert. In all, over 8,000 people died, including Martin’s own wife.

His labors finally came to an end about 11 years later, just one year after the conclusion of the war. His ministry spanned 32 years, all but the first and the last overwhelmed by the great conflict that engulfed his town. Tough circumstances in which to be thankful. But he managed. And he wrote these words:

Now thank we all our God
With heart and hands and voices;
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom his world rejoices.

It takes a magnificent spirit to come through such hardship and express gratitude. Here is a great lesson. Surrounded by tremendous adversity, thanksgiving will deliver you…with heart and hand and voices.

Rescue the Perishing

Hymn: “Rescue the Perishing” by Fanny Crosby

“I remember writing the hymn in 1869. It was written following a personal experience at the New York City Bowery Mission. I usually tried to get to the mission at least one night a week to talk to ‘my boys.’ I was addressing a large company of working men one hot summer evening, when the thought kept forcing itself on my mind that some mother’s boy must be rescued that night or he might be eternally lost. So I made a pressing plea that if there was a boy present who had wandered from his mother’s home and teaching, he should come to me at the end of the service. A young man of 18 came forward – ‘Did you mean me, Miss Crosby? I promised my mother to meet her in heaven, but as I am now living, that will be impossible.’ We prayed for him and suddenly he arose with a new light in his eyes – ‘Now I am ready to meet my mother in heaven, for I have found God.'”

(Source: Fanny Crosby’s Story – S. Trevena Jackson p.76)

Rescue the Perishing

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.

Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter,
Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
Chords that are broken will vibrate once more.

Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way patiently win them;
Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior had died.

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying;
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.

Praise Songs Explained

Not long ago a farmer went to the city one weekend and attended the big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was. “Well,” said the farmer, “It was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns.”

“Praise choruses,” said his wife, “What are those?”

“Oh, they’re okay. They’re sort of like hymns, only different,” said the farmer.

“”Well, what’s the difference?” asked his wife.

The farmer said, “Well it’s like this – If I were to say to you:

`Martha, the cows are in the corn,’ well that would be a hymn. If, on the other hand, I were to say to you:

`Martha Martha, Martha, Oh, Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA,
the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows,
the white cows, the black and white cows,
the COWS, COWS, COWS are in the corn,
are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn,
the CORN, CORN, CORN,’

Then, if I were to repeat the whole thing two or three times, well that
would be a praise chorus.”

Hymns Explained

A young, new Christian from the big city attended the small town church one weekend. He came home and his wife asked him how it was.

“Well,” said the young man, “It was good. They did something different, however. They sang hymns instead of regular songs.”

“Hymns,” said his wife, “What are those?”

“Oh, they’re okay. They’re sort of like regular songs, only different,” said the young man.

“Well, what’s the difference?” asked his wife.

The young man said, “Well it’s like this – If I were to say to you, `Martha, the cows are in the corn,’ well that would be a regular song. If, on the other hand, I were to say to you:

Oh Martha, dear Martha, hear thou my cry
Inclinest thine ear to the words of my mouth.
Turn thou thy whole wondrous ear by and by
To the righteous, inimitable, glorious truth.

For the way of the animals who can explain
There in their heads is no shadow of sense,
Hearkenest they in God’s sun or his rain
Unless from the mild, tempting corn they are fenced.

Yea those cows in glad bovine, rebellious delight,
Have broke free their shackles, their warm pens eschewed.
Then goaded by minions of darkness and night
They all my mild Chilliwack sweet corn have chewed.

So look to that bright shining day by and by,
Where all foul corruptions of earth are reborn.
Where no vicious animal makes my soul cry
And I no longer see those foul cows in the corn.

Then, if I were to do only verses one, three, and four and do a key change on the last verse, well that would be a hymn.”

Deck of Cards

This is a story about a soldier in the North Africa Campaign in World War II. After heavy fighting, the men returned to camp. The next day being Sunday, the Chaplain had set up a church service. The men were asked to take out their Bibles or Prayer Books.

The Chaplain noticed one soldier looking at a deck of cards. After service, he was taken by the Chaplain to see the Major. The Chaplain explained to the Major what he had seen. The Major told the young soldier he would have to be punished if he could not explain himself. The young soldier told the Major that during the battle he had neither a Bible or a Prayer Book so he would use his deck of cards and explained:

  • “You see Sir when I look at the ACE, it tells me that there is one GOD and no other.
  • When I see the “2”, it reminds me that there are two parts to the Bible, the OLD TESTAMENT and the NEW TESTAMENT
  • The “3” tells me of the TRINITY OF GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON and GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT.
  • The “4” reminds me of the FOUR GOSPELS, MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE and JOHN.
  • When I see the “5”, it tell me of the FIVE UNWISE VIRGINS who were lost and the five were saved.
  • The “6” makes me mindful that GOD CREATED THE EARTH IN JUST SIX DAY, and GOD said that it was good.
  • GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY.
  • As I look at the “8”, it reminds me that GOD DESTROYED ALL LIFE BY WATER EXCEPT FOR EIGHT PEOPLE, Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their three son’s wives.
  • When I see the “9”, I think of the NINE LEPERS that GOD healed, There were ten lepers in all, but only one stopped to thank him.
  • The “10” reminds me of the TEN COMMANDMENTS carved in stone by the hand of GOD.
  • The “JACK” makes me remember the Prince of Darkness. Like a roaring lion, he devours those that he can.
  • When I look at the “QUEEN”, I see the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS.
  • As I look at the last card. ‘THE KING’, it reminds me that JESUS IS LORD OF LORDS and KING OF KINGS.
  • There are 365 spots on a deck of cards, and that is the number of days in each year.
  • There are 52 cards to deck and that is the number of weeks in a year.
  • There are 12 picture cards and that is the number of months in a year.
  • There are 4 different suits in a deck and that is the number of months in a quarter of a year…”

And so, the young soldier then said to the Major,”You see, Sir, that my intentions were honorable.My deck of cards serves as by BIBLE, my PRAYER BOOK and my ALMANAC.”

This was a song that was sung as a narrative. It was done by Tex Ritter, Wink Martindale and T. Texas Tyler in 1948

LATER ADDED BY OTHERS
A deck of cards should remind us that we need JESUS 365 days, 52 weeks and 12 months a year and that we should PRAY “4” others.

Hum That Christmas Tune

Introduction
How well do you know the songs and carols commonly associated with Christmas?

Game Description
Common Christmas Tunes can be the foundation for a variety of Christmas games including “Name that Tune”
Christmas Name that Tune (Musical or by Lyrics)

Game Materials
If you are doing a musical name that you can either get a pianist to play the first few notes of a song, or you can have someone with a good musical voice to hum them. A modern day variation might be to collect the Midi files of common tunes to play from a computer. Here are a couple of sources for Christmas Midi Files:

For a lyrics based version you need to select some of the less familiar stanzas from the Christmas Songs. Here is a great site to get the lyrics:
http://www.mikeleal.com/christmas/songs.html

Game Preparation
Depending on how you intend to play, you either need the less familiar lyrics of Christmas songs, a piano, or the midi files.

Game Play

    • Musical Version:
      1. Divide the group into two or more teams.
      2. Teams must make a bid on how quickly they can identify the song.
      3. If using a piano they can bid by notes…. i.e. “I can name that Christmas tune in 7 notes” or if my midi, by time.. “I can name that Christmas tune in 5 seconds.”
      4. Points can be awarded based upon the difficulty of the song.
    • Lyrics Version:
      1. Divide the group into two or more teams.
      2. Teams try to be the first one to hum the tune based upon the lyrics provided by you.
      3. Read out the lyrics and the first team to correctly sing the song or hum the tune is awarded the points.
      4. Points can be determined by the difficulty of the song.
  • Christmas Tune Team Hunt
    1. Decide how many teams you want to have and choose one song for each team.
    2. On pieces of paper, include the lyrics to the song. Cut them apart so that one line of the lyric is one one strip of paper. Mix them all together.
    3. When participants arrive give each a random line of a song as contained on s strip of paper.
    4. Participants must figure out what Christmas song it is and then hum the song and begin looking for others with the rest of the lyrics.
    5. The first team to find all the words to a song wins.
    6. This variation makes a great icebreaker and also serves as a crowdbreaker, randomly placing people in different teams for future games or activities.

To God be the Glory

“How can I say thanks for the things you have done for me–
Things so undeserved, yet You give to prove Your love for me?
The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude–
All that I am and ever hope to be, I owe it all to Thee.

To God be the glory, to God be the Glory;
To God be the glory for the things He has done.
With His blood He has saved me; with His power He has raised me;
To God be the glory for the things He has done.

Just let me live my life; let it be pleasing, Lord, to Thee.
And should I gain any praise, let it go to Calvary…

With His blood He has saved me; with His power He has raised me;
To God be the glory for things He has done.”

Hymn Truths

We sing “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and are content with 5-10 minutes.
We sing “Onward Christian Soldier” and wait to be drafted into His service.
We sing “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and don’t use the one we have.
We sing “There Shall be Showers of Blessings” but do not come when it rains.
We sing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” and let the least little offense sever it.
We sing “Serve the Lord With Gladness” and gripe about all we have to do.
We sing “The Whole Wide World For Jesus” and never invite our next door neighbor.
We sing “Cast Thy Burden on the Lord” and worry ourselves into nervous breakdowns.
We sing “We’re Marching to Zion” but fail to march to worship or Sunday School.
We sing “I Love to Tell the Story” and never mention it all.

Fanny Crosby

crosby.jpgThe grave of Fanny Crosby, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, has a simple marker that reads, “Aunt Fanny — She Hath Done What She Could.”

Fanny Crosby was blind from six weeks of age because of a mistreatment by a man claiming to be a doctor. Yet God used her to write more than 9000 hymns such as: “Blessed Assurance; All The Way My Saviour Leads Me; I Am Thine O Lord; Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross; Praise Him, Praise Him; Rescue The Perishing; To God Be The Glory;” and “Tell Me The Story Of Jesus,” to name a few.

Although blind, she was the guest of six presidents and a personal friend to Grover Cleveland. Her 9000 hymns were to set to music by every popular American tunesmith of the nineteenth century and still bless the Church today.

Christmasmusic.jpg
Materials

None

Game Preparation
Divide the youth into twelve groups of any size.

Game Play
Group everyone into 12 teams. Give each team one verse of the twelve days of Christmas song. They will be responsible for singing that verse of the song. Fractured Christmas Carols

No one can fracture a Christmas carol better than a kid. Unfortunately they sometimes get the words a little confused. Sing along with these new takes on old favorites:

Deck the Halls with Buddy Holly [Bows of Holly]
We three kings of porridge and tar [Orient are]
On the first day of Christmas my tulip gave to me [true love]
He’s makin’ a list, chicken and rice. Santa Clause is Coming to Town [Checking it twice]
Noel. Noel, Barney’s the king of Israel. [Born is]
With the jelly toast proclaim [Heavenly Host]
Olive, the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names… [all of]
Frosty the Snowman is a ferret elf, I say [fairy tale they say]
Sleep in heavenly peas [Peace]
In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is sparse and brown [Parson Brown]
You’ll go down in listerine [History]
Oh, what fun it is to ride with one horse, soap and hay [open sleigh]
Come, froggy faithful [all ye]
You’ll tell Carol, “Be a skunk, I require”[Yuletide carol, fa la la la la lala la la]
Good tidings we bring to you and your kid [kin]

The Holly and the Ivy

holly.jpg

An Old English Traditional Christmas Carol

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown.

The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom
As white as the lily flower,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To be our sweet savior.

The holly bears a berry
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To do poor sinners good.

The holly bears a prickle
As sharp as any thorn
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
On Christmas day in the morn.

The holly bears a bark
As bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
For to redeem us all.

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown.

We Are the Reason

As little children we would dream of Christmas morn
and all the gifts and toys we knew we’d find.
But we never realized a Baby born one blessed night
Gave us the greatest gift of our lives…
WE are the reason that He gave His life;
We are the reason that He suffered and died.
To a world that was lost He gave all He could give
To show us the reason to live.

As the years went by we learned more about gifts–
The giving of ourselves and what that means.
On a dark and cloudy day a Man hung crying in the rain,
Because of love–because of love.
WE are the reason that He gave His life;
We are the reason that He suffered and died.
To a world that was lost He gave all He could give
To show us the reason to live.

I’ve finally found a reason for living;
It’s in giving every part of my heart to Him.
In all that I do, every word that I say
I’ll be giving my all just for Him…for Him…
WE are the reason that He gave His life;
We are the reason that He suffered and died.
To a world that was lost He gave all He could give
To show us the reason to live…
He is my reason to live!

Music in Times of Hardship

musicscore.jpgPsalm 90:14-15 “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all of our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.”

Floods of sorrow and hardship that would have drowned a lesser soul, released a song of hope and Christian Joy in the heart of reverend Luther Burgess Bridgers. During the early years if his ministry God richly blessed him and his wife and three precious boys were born into the family. In 1910, his popularity was growing and he received and accepted an invitation to conduct a two-week series of evangelistic services in another state. Leaving his family to the safe-keeping of his wife’s immediate relatives, he kissed them goodbye and left. Two glorious weeks later, the services closed and many a sinner was converted and many a saint was strengthened. He was wonderfully used by God and was at the peak of popularity,,, then that very night, he received a phone call. A disastous fire had completely consumed the house of his father in law and taken the lives of his wife and his three sons. It was at this time that he wrote the words and tune to a song very familiar to us today…

There’s within my heart a melody
Jesus whispers sweet and low
Fear not I am with thee, peace be still
In all of life’s ebb and flow.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Sweetest name I know,
Fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go.

The third stanza pointed to the momentary times of hardship, but he last looked to an eternal future.

Though sometimes he leads through waters deep,
Trials fall across the way,
Though sometimes the paths seem rough and steep
See his footprints all the way.

Soon he’s coming back to welcome me
Far beyond the starry sky
I shall wing my flight to worlds unknown
I shall reign with him on high!

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Sweetest name I know,
Fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go.
