The Gardener held a delicate cocoon in the palm of his hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d The young boy asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy it\u2019s a cocoon,\u201d replied the gardener. \u201cInside is a caterpillar. He\u2019s in the dark. But when he\u2019s ready, he\u2019ll break out and turn into a wondrous and beautiful butterfly.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCan I have it?\u201d asked the young boy.”<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course,\u201d answered the gardener. \u201cBut first, you must promise that you won\u2019t open the cocoon for the butterfly when he begins to break out.\u201d<\/p>\n
The young boy agreed and took the cocoon home with him.<\/p>\n
The very next day, the cocoon began to tremble and the butterfly fought hard to escape. The entire cocoon shook and trembled with the butterfly\u2019s efforts to emerge. The struggle went on for what seemed like an eternity to the concerned young boy. He became so distressed over the butterfly\u2019s struggle that he decided to help and broke open the cocoon.<\/p>\n
He continued to watch, eager to see the butterfly soar\u00a0with its beautiful wings. Unfortunately, the butterfly just crawled around with withered wings and a huge body. It died, never able to fly.<\/p>\n
The boy returned to the gardener crying and cradling the dead butterfly in his hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou helped the butterfly escape from the cocoon, didn\u2019t you?\u201d the gardener asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith tears in his eyes; the boy admitted that he had opened the cocoon.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat you didn\u2019t understand,\u201d the gardener said, \u201cwas that the butterfly had to go through the struggle. Only then could he transform from a lowly caterpillar to a magnificent butterfly. Only then would he expand his wings and be able to fly. By trying to make it easier for him, you actually made it harder for him; in this case, impossible to fly. You killed him with good intentions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sometimes, a little extra effort is precisely what prepares us for the next obstacle in life.
