The tale of the centurion<\/em><\/p>\n

\"centurion.jpg\"The sky was dark, gloomy, ominous.
\nA blackened canvas, awaiting a storm.<\/p>\n

We had spit upon his face.
\nBlood and spit dripped down his body,
\nlike rain off a tattered jacket.
\nHe struggles to remain conscious,
\nHis body is beaten, shredded, disfigured…
\nThe braided whip, pieces of iron and stone, unleashed their fury.
\nLeft behind–hanging skin, quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh.
\nHis brow is punctured, dripping,
\nA pool of blood beneath him, a crown of thorns upon his head.<\/p>\n

He stands and stumbles,
\nDizzy in the center of the raging storm of hatred.
\nHis eyes strain to focus, the blur of faces,
\nThe jeering voices rising in thunderous commotion,
\nCursing, mocking, taunting.<\/p>\n

Seizing him, I spin him around and crack my fist upon his face.
\nOpen wounds, stripped, naked, bleeding.
\nI push him to the rocky ground,
\nStones embedding in his wounds…<\/p>\n

I drag him, sideways to rough, splintered timbers,
\nHis arms, stretched and held.
\nA spike at his wrist…
\nA hammer raised–Clank, Clank, Clank…
\nThe timber raised, this man of Galilee upon it…<\/p>\n

He had promised life, healed the wounded, took away pain,
\nBut now, his life was draining, his body wounded, engulfed in pain.<\/p>\n

Yet, with compassion in his eyes,
\nNot anger, not hatred, but compassion,
\nHe looks…<\/p>\n

He’s looking at ME, his executioner…
\nAs if waiting?
\nWhat to do?<\/p>\n

To look away, or look at him.
\n“How can I, a Centurion, believe?”
\n“Come down off the cross if you’re the Son of God!”<\/p>\n

He still looks,
\nCompassionately, waiting,
\nWhat to do?
\n“Speak to me! Say something?”
\n…..Nothing…..<\/p>\n

The crowd thins as the sky darkens,
\n“Come with us, don’t waste your time!”
\n“He’s no more God than you or I!”
\nI stand, speechless, agonizing…
\n…then…<\/p>\n

As a child to his parent he says so tender,
\n“Father, into your hands my Spirit I give,”
\nAnd at that moment he is no longer.<\/p>\n

The earth shakes, the thunder bellows,
\n“Run you fool, forget the wretch”
\nI can’t, can’t move, can’t budge.
\nFall to my knees,
\n“Surely, this MUST be the Son of God”<\/p>\n
