I took a piece of plastic clay
\nAnd idly fashioned it one day,
\nAnd as my fingers pressed it still,
\nIt moved and yielded to my will.<\/p>\n

I came again when days were past–
\nThe bit of clay was hard at last;
\nThe form I gave it, it still bore,
\nBut I could change that form no more.<\/p>\n

I took a piece of living clay
\nAnd gently formed it day by day,
\nAnd moulded with my power and art
\nA young child’s soft and yeilding heart.<\/p>\n

I came again when years were gone–
\nIt was a man I looked upon;
\nHe still that early impress wore,
\nAnd I could change him nevermore.<\/p>\n
