What’s all this hectic rush and worry?
\nWhere go these crowds who run and curry?
\nWhy all the lights — the Christmas trees?
\nThe jolly “fat man,” tell me please!
\nWhy, don’t you know? This is the day
\nFor parties and for fun and play;
\nWhy this is Christmas! So this is Christmas, do you say?
\nBut where is Christ this Christmas day?
\nHas He been lost among the throng?
\nHis voice drowned out by empty song?
\nNo. He’s not here — you’ll find Him where
\nSome humble soul now kneels in prayer,
\nWho knows the Christ of Christmas.
\nBut see the many aimless thousands
\nWho gather on this Christmas Day,
\nWhose hearts have never yet been opened,
\nOr said to Him, “Come in to stay.”
\nIn countless homes the candles burning,
\nIn countless hearts expectant yearning
\nFor gifts and presents, food and fun,
\nAnd laughter till the day is done.
\nBut not a tear of grief or sorrow
\nFor Him so poor He had to borrow
\nA crib, a colt, a boat, a bed
\nWhere He could lay His weary head.
\nI’m tired of all this empty celebration,
\nOf feasting, drinking, recreation;
\nI’ll go instead to Calvary.
\nAnd there I’ll kneel with those who know
\nThe meaning of that manger low,
\nAnd find the Christ — this Christmas.
\nI leap by faith across the years
\nTo that great day when He appears
\nThe second time, to rule and reign,
\nTo end all sorrow, death, and pain.
\nIn endless bliss we then shall dwell
\nWith Him who saved our souls from hell,
\nAnd worship Christ — not Christmas!<\/p>\n
