I was an onion before Christ set me free;
\nLayers upon layers of iniquity.
\nAn ugly old onion whose fragrance was strong;
\nThat my Jesus bought and loved all along.<\/p>\n

Unknown to me what He was going to do;
\nOf what He was planning, I had not a clue.
\nPulling each layer off one by one,
\nIn order to make me more like Jesus the Son.<\/p>\n

The first layer, wasn’t so bad,
\nI saw all the sins that I knew I had.
\nThey were easy to fix, just change the way I talk,
\nAnd learn more of how He wanted me to walk.<\/p>\n

Reading His Word, and learning again;
\nHow to put aside my life of sin.
\nBut the next layer was pulled which hurt more,
\nHe was getting closer to the core.<\/p>\n

Unknown what He would find there,
\nI simply gave it to Him in prayer.
\nAs another layer was removed, He started to cry;
\nPulling this layer brought pain to my Father on High.<\/p>\n

And I was crying over the sadness I felt;
\nThe brokenness and all of the guilt.
\nPast memories that I thought were gone;
\nBut they were buried under layers disguised in a fragrance so strong.<\/p>\n

As onions are peeled more and more,
\nThey put tears in our eyes as we get close to the core;
\nSo my Father wept over my pain;
\nGiving me a balm of comfort and strength to sustain.<\/p>\n

“NO MORE LAYERS!” I would scream,
\nAs He continued to peel each layer off of me.
\n“I’ll have nothing left, my Lord, what will I do?
\nI’ll be nothing but a worthless core to You.”<\/p>\n

But He simply said “Trust Me,” continuing to peel,
\nI believed He was blinded to my pain that was so real.
\nYear after year I shrunk more and more;
\nUntil all that was left of this onion was a core.<\/p>\n

It was then that I began to understand;
\nAs the Lord embraced me in His loving hand.
\nHe said, “Now, and only now, can you be;
\nThe creation that will minister before Me.<\/p>\n

“Clothed with the righteousness, only from above;
\none are your layers of, self, so you can be filled with My love.”
\nHe look my layers of sin, hurt and pain
\nAnd clothed me with love, truth and mercy in His name.<\/p>\n

Yes, we are all onions, learning with each day
\nHow to overcome as each layer is taken away.
\nSome layers tear and pull at our heart;
\nWhile others grieve us to our innermost part.<\/p>\n

But we are nothing but an ugly onion without Christ.
\nLayers upon layers of pride, sin and strife.
\nOnly God can take those layers away.
\nAnd clothe us with His righteousness in that Final Day.<\/p>\n
