An old man going a lone highway
\nCame at the evening cold and gray
\nTo a chasm vast and deep and wide,
\nThrough which was flowing a swollen tide.
\nThe old man crossed in the twilight dim
\nThat swollen stream held no fears for him
\nBut he paused when safe on the other side
\nAnd built a bridge to span the tide.<\/p>\n

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near,
\n“You are wasting strength with building here.
\nYour journey will end with the ending day;
\nYou never again must pass this way.
\nYou have crossed the chasm deep and wide;
\nWhy build you the bridge at the eventide?”<\/p>\n

The builder lifted his old gray head,
\n“Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said,
\n“There follows after me today
\nA youth whose feet must pass this way.
\nThis swollen stream which was naught to me
\nTo that fair haired youth may a pitfall be.
\nHe, too, must cross in the twilight dim.
\nGood friend, I am building the bridge for him.”<\/p>\n
