For example, \u201cStop complaining that your Spanish teacher gave you a failing grade. Go into school tomorrow and talk to her about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threatening<\/strong><br \/>\nTelling a youth to do something, \u201cor else . . .\u201d &#8211; suggesting there\u2019s only one acceptable course of action. For example, \u201cIf you don\u2019t start studying more, I\u2019m not going to work with you on your school work any more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preaching<\/strong><br \/>\nTelling youth how to act or behave &#8211; usually has a moralistic, \u2018this is the right thing to do\u2019 tone. For example, \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t talk about other people like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoiding<\/strong><br \/>\nTrying to avoid problems or uncomfortable situations in the hope that they may go away on their own. For example, \u201cOh, let\u2019s not talk about that. It\u2019s so depressing! Let\u2019s try to find something happy to think about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pacifying<\/strong><br \/>\nTrying to make a youth feel better without really addressing the problem. For example: if a youth says, \u201cI feel bad because I was really mean to my little sister!\u201d You reply, \u201cOh, don\u2019t worry about it, I did the same thing many times.\u201d Even though you may be sincere, you haven\u2019t helped the youth resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lecturing<\/strong><br \/>\nGiving your youth unsolicited advise. For example, \u201cIf you want to get ahead in life you must really go to college.
