The Master was searching for a vessel to use:
\nBefore Him were many,
\nWhich one would He choose?
\n“Take me,” cried the gold one.
\n“I’m shiny and bright;
\nI’m of great value and I do things just right.
\nMy beauty and luster will outshine the rest,
\nAnd for someone like you, Master, Gold would be best.”
\nThe Master passed on with no word at all,
\nAnd looked at a silver urn, grand and tall.
\n“I’ll serve you dear Master, I’ll pour out your wine;
\nI’ll be on your table whenever you dine.
\nMy lines are so graceful, my carving so true,
\nAnd silver will always complement you.”
\nUnheeding, the Master passed on to the brass,
\nWide-mouthed and shallow and polished like glass.
\n“Here, here!” cried the vessel, “I know I will do;
\nPlace me on your table for all men to view.”
\n“Look at me,” called the goblet of crystal so clear,
\n“My transparency shows my contents so dear.
\nThough fragile am I, I will serve you with pride,
\nAnd I’m sure I’ll be happy in your house to abide.”
\nThen the Master came next to a vessel of wood;
\nPolished and carved, it solidly stood.
\n“You may use me, dearest Master,” the wooden bowl said.
\n“But I’d rather you used me for fruit, not for bread.”
\nThen the Master looked down and saw a vessel of clay.
\nEmpty and broken it helplessly lay.
\nNo hope had the vessel that the Master might choose,
\nTo cleanse, and make whole, to fill and to use.
\n“Ah! Now This is the vessel I’ve been hoping to find.
\nI’ll mend it and use it and make it all mine.
\nI need not the vessel with pride of itself,
\nNor one that is narrow to sit on the shelf;
\nNor one that is big-mouthed and shallow and loud;
\nNor one that displays his contents so proud;
\nNor the one who thinks he can do things just right;
\nBut this plain earthen vessel filled with power and might.”
\nThen gently He lifted the vessel of clay,
\nMended and cleansed it and filled it that day;
\nSpoke to it kindly – “There’s work you must do…
\nJust pour out to others as I pour into you.”<\/p>\n
