{"id":55,"date":"2006-08-12T08:11:36","date_gmt":"2006-08-12T08:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.creativeyouthideas.com\/resources\/?p=55"},"modified":"2021-04-08T22:35:14","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T14:35:14","slug":"10-characteristics-of-successful-mentors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.creativeyouthideas.com\/resources\/mentoring-youth\/10-characteristics-of-successful-mentors\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Characteristics of Successful Mentors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a study of Big Brothers, Big Sisters in the USA, one of the largest mentoring organizations in the world<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Be a friend\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t act like a parent<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t try to be an authority figure<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t preach about values<\/li>\n<li>DO FOCUS ON THE BOND<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have realistic goals and expectations\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on overall development, not performance and change<\/li>\n<li>Center initial goals on the relationship itself<\/li>\n<li>Emphasize friendship over performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have fun together\n<ul>\n<li>Youth spell love \u2013 TIME<\/li>\n<li>Informal activities lay the foundation for formal ones<\/li>\n<li>Shared activities become great discussion starters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Give your prot\u00e9g\u00e9 voice and choice in deciding activities\n<ul>\n<li>Help them to explore possibilities and then make their choices<\/li>\n<li>Listen more than you talk<\/li>\n<li>Question more than you Preach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Be positive\n<ul>\n<li>Praise and encouragement build self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Be supportive rather than critical \u2013 focus on solutions rather than problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Let the prot\u00e9g\u00e9 have much of the control over what the two of you talk about\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t push, be patient<\/li>\n<li>Be sensitive and responsive to cues<\/li>\n<li>Let them know that can confide in you without you becoming judgmental<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Listen\n<ul>\n<li>Let youth vent without criticizing them<\/li>\n<li>When you listen they see you as a friend, not an authority figure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Respect the trust your prot\u00e9g\u00e9 places in you\n<ul>\n<li>Respond in ways that show you understand. This is not the same as agree<\/li>\n<li>Reassure the prot\u00e9g\u00e9 that you are there for them<\/li>\n<li>Advice should not be dispensed but mutually discovered<\/li>\n<li>If you have to convey concern or displeasure, do it with caring and understanding<\/li>\n<li>Sound like a friend not a parent\u2026 youth easily discern the difference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remember your relationship is with the youth and not the youth\u2019s parent\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain cordial contact, but you are not there to be a spy for parents.
