{"id":580,"date":"2008-07-29T08:49:45","date_gmt":"2008-07-29T08:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.creativeyouthideas.com\/resources\/?p=580"},"modified":"2021-04-08T20:09:31","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T12:09:31","slug":"understanding-the-books-of-proverbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.creativeyouthideas.com\/resources\/creative-teaching-ideas\/understanding-the-books-of-proverbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding the Books of Proverbs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many proverbs are &#8220;variations on a theme.&#8221; What major themes have you noticed in the book of proverbs?<br \/>\n<em>Possible answers are : wisdom \/ fool; righteous \/ wicked; tongue\/ speech; diligence \/ sluggard; honesty \/ dishonesty; Justice; pride \/ humility.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Proverbs has several ways it gets across a message:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Couplets<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a pair of verses that talk about the same thing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personification<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; visual personification of the unseen characteristic (e.g. wisdom is personified as a woman)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simile<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; A is like B<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antithesis<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a second couplet states the opposite of the first (.e. first talks about the righteous and the second the wicked)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Synonymous parallelism<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a second couplet states the same as the first but in a different way<\/li>\n<li><strong>Synthetic parallelism<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a second couplet adds some new idea or thought to the first line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ask youth to go through some of the proverbs and identify the couplets and characteristics of each one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contradicts<\/li>\n<li>condones an action<\/li>\n<li>condemns an action<\/li>\n<li>compares<\/li>\n<li>combines &#8211; adds a thought<\/li>\n<li>characterizes<\/li>\n<li>etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some proverbs are simple observations on life, others are advice for living.
