To God be the Glory

“How can I say thanks for the things you have done for me–
Things so undeserved, yet You give to prove Your love for me?
The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude–
All that I am and ever hope to be, I owe it all to Thee.

To God be the glory, to God be the Glory;
To God be the glory for the things He has done.
With His blood He has saved me; with His power He has raised me;
To God be the glory for the things He has done.

Just let me live my life; let it be pleasing, Lord, to Thee.
And should I gain any praise, let it go to Calvary…

With His blood He has saved me; with His power He has raised me;
To God be the glory for things He has done.”

Autumn

“Of all the seasons, autumn is my favorite. There’s a feel about it, a distinct and undeniable aura that surrounds it. Being a football freak, I naturally would favor autumn. But of course it’s much deeper than that.

Those leaves are part of it. What color, what artistry! Crisp, frosty mornings also help. What a refreshing change from oppressively hot afternoons and sweltering nights! Then there is a helpful return to routine as school starts. And along comes Thanksgiving, a nostalgic reminder that God has indeed ‘shed His grace on thee.’ The firewood is cut. The pumpkins are getting bigger. Our hearts are overflowing.

Let’s think of autumn as a season of reflection. Time to gain new perspective. To stroll along the back roads of our minds. To think about what. And where. And why. Such visits through the museum of memory never fail to assist us in evaluating the way we were and establishing the way we want to be. This implies change, another reason autumn seems to represent a season of reflection. It’s during this season the foliage changes. And the weather changes. And the time changes. Birds make their annual journey southward. Squirrels finish storing their nuts. Salmon start their phenomenal swim back to their spawning grounds. And many of the larger animals take their final stretch before curling up for a long winter’s nap. With incredible consistency, all these creatures in the natural world act out their individual pageants without external instruction or some script to follow.

Quiety, without flare or fanfare, God graciously moves upon our lives, taking us from summer to autumn, a season when He mysteriously writes His agenda on the tablets of our hearts. Patiently He waits for change to begin. Without exception, it does. And we reflect on that as well.

Has autumn arrived in your life? Think before you answer. Close your eyes for a minute or so and consider what God has been doing deep within your heart.”

Thanksgiving is Coming

When I was a young turkey, new to the coop
My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop,
Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow,
And he told me there was something that I had to know.

His look and his tone I will always remember,
When he told me of the horrors of ….Black November,
“Come about August, now listen to me,
Each day you’ll get six meals instead of just three.

“And soon you’ll be thick, where once you were thin,
and you’ll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin,”
“And then one morning, when you’re warm in your bed,
In’ll burst the farmer’s wife, and hack off your head.”

“Then she’ll pluck out your feathers so you’re bald and pink,
Scoop out your insides and leave ya lyin’ in the sink.”
“And then comes the worst part” he said, almost blushing
“She’ll spread your cheeks and pack you with stuffing.”

Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat,
I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,
And decide right then that not to be cooked,
I’d have to lay low and remain overlooked.

I began a new diet of nuts and granola,
High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola,
And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes,
I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes.

I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half,
And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed,
But ’twas I who was laughing, under my breath,
As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death.

And sure enough when Black November rolled around,
I was the last turkey left in the entire compound,
So now I’m a pet in the farmer’s wife’s lap,
I haven’t a worry, so I eat and I nap.

She held me today, while sewing and humming,
And smiled at me and said “Christmas is coming…..”

God’s Voice Mail

What if God had voice mail ?

Imagine praying and hearing this:
“Thank you for calling My Father’s House. Please select one of the following four options:
Press 1 for requests…
press 2 for thanksgiving….
press 3 for complaints…
and Press 4 for all other inquiries.”

What if God used the familiar excuse:
“All the angels are helping other customers right now. Please stay on the line…your call will be
answered in the order it was received.”

Can you imagine getting these kind of responses as you called on God in prayer!…
“If you would like to speak with Gabriel, press 1..
Michael, press 2…
for any other angel, press 3.
And if you would like King David to sing psalm for you, press 4.”

“To find out if a loved one has been assigned to Heaven, enter his or her social security number.”

“For reservations at My Father’s House, press the letters J-O-H-N followed by the numbers 316.
For answers to nagging questions about dinosaurs, the age of the earth and where Noah’s ark is,
wait until you get here”.

“Our computers show that you have called once today already. Please hang up immediately. This office is closed for the weekend. Please call again on Monday after 9:00 a.m.”

Thank God!…you don’t call Him too often…. you only need to ring once and God hears you. You’ll never get a busy signal. God takes each call and knows each caller personally.

“When you call, the Lord will answer. You will cry for help and He will say “Here I am.” ” Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for me with all your heart.” (Jer 29:12-13).

Thank goodness I have never called Him and was told His computer was down.

When Jesus Looks

reflection.jpgWhen Jesus looks upon my life,
What picture does He see?
Does He see His own reflection,
Or does He just see me?

Does He see His likeness,
The product of His hand.
Or just another Christian,
Who never took a stand?

Does He see a child of God,
A child that He set free?
Living life to honor Him,
Or does He just see me?

What about the other folks,
I meet along the way.
Do I show them Jesus,
To brighten up their day?

When someone looks into my eyes,
Can they truly see.
That calm and gentle peace of God,
That dwells inside of me

When I reach out and shake a hand,
Is He right there in my grip?
Can they feel that strength from God,
That steadies when I slip?

When folks are in my presence,
Do they know His Spirit’s there?
Can they see that He’s the one,
Who guides me everywhere

When other people think of me,
What is on their mind?
Do they think of Jesus Christ,
So gentle and so kind?

I try to be like Jesus,
Every single day.
Spreading love and kindness,
All along my way.

I’m afraid that I have failed,
I could not pass the test.
Deep inside my heart I know,
I haven’t done my best.

I have had to fight my flesh,
Since the day that I was born.
It’s always causing trouble,
And being such a thorn.

That’s why His Spirit dwells in me,
He’s helping me to learn.
In every situation,
Where I need to turn.

He knew I’d never pass the test,
That’s why He took my place.
He gave His life to save my soul,
He suffered my disgrace.

Now I try to be like Him,
I must present Him well.
So other folks will want His gift,
And turn their backs on hell.

Other folks should see the joy,
That Christ has given me.
They should want to have it too,
Especially since it’s free.

They should begin to ask me,
What is it they must do.
Just how it is they go about,
Getting Jesus too.

Then I get to tell them,
This wondrous gift is free.
It only takes a humble heart,
A prayer on bended knee.

Someday when I’m face to face,
With the Lord who set me free.
Will He see His own reflection,
Or will He just see me?

Cupcake Faith

halloween_cupcake.jpgDescription
Use this creative object lesson as a surprising illustration to kids that God looks at our heart, not our appearances. It can be used on any occasion or as a children’s sermon, but with a reference to tombs, and masks it also serves as a fun lesson for an alternative to Halloween.

Materials
Cupcake mix, cotton balls, cupcake cups, Cupcake Tin

Preparation

  1. Using a cake mix or any cupcake mix, prepare the batter according to instructions.
  2. Place the paper cupcake liners in the cupcake tin.
  3. For about 50% of the cupcakes, place several cotton balls in the middle of the cup to partially fill them.
  4. Pour the batter into the cups. For those with cotton balls, be sure it seeps into the sides of the cup and covers the cotton balls.
  5. Bake the cupcakes as per directions.
  6. Make enough untainted cupcakes for your entire group.
  7. Decorate the cupcakes containing cotton balls with icing and candly sprinkles etc so they look very enticing. Do not decorate the normal cupcakes in any way i.e. leave them plain.

WARNING: One person who tried this had the batter soak into the cotton balls so that the kids didn’t notice and swallowed one. While they are harmless and will simply pass through the digestive system, to prevent this make sure you fill the bottom of the paper liner full of cotton balls so that you don’t have this problem. An alternative to cotton balls is to slice off the top with a bread knife and then hollow out the center of the cupcake. Put the top back on and frost it for a hollow cupcake? Are some of our pursuits in life a little hollow when we finally get hold of them?

Demonstration

  1. Pass the cupcakes to the youth or children as a group. They must not eat them until everyone has one. Only allow one cupcake per person.
  2. Some will choose the fancy ones while others may choose the plain ones.
  3. When the youth or children begin to eat the cupcakes, some of them are in for a surprise. Beneath the shallow top layer of cupcake there is cotton!
  4. Wait for their responses.
  5. After the lesson have some cupcakes available for everyone who got the tainted ones with the cotton balls inside

Discussion
You can’t always tell how good something is by looking at the outside. Sometimes what seems attractive on the outside hides something far less attractive inside.

While people typically look at the outward appearance, God looks inside – at the heart. It’s difficult to tell what a person is really like simply from their appearance. Some people may be beautiful on the outside, but inside they hide a very mean, selfish, and hateful heart. Some people may seem a little plain or less attractive in appearance, but inside they are loving, gentle, and kind.

Most of us spend lots of time and attention on making ourselves look good. We pay careful attention to the clothes we wear (designer jeans etc), the shoes we wear, our complexion, our hairstyle, etc. Yet, how much time do we spend making sure our heart is right? When our heart is right with God, when our attitudes are Christlike, when we have a loving spirit, then when others get a taste of God in us, they will find Christianity attractive. Christ’s greatest criticism of the pharisees was that they focused on their appearance yet left ugliness in their hearts:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” (Matthew 23:27-28)

Christ called the Pharisees hypocrites. The Greek word for hypocrite actually refers to someone who is wearing a mask, who is an actor. Halloween isn’t the only time of the year when people dress up and wear masks. Throughout the year we often show a different personality on the outside than the person we are in reality. Jesus also called the pharisees “whitewashed tombstones.” “Rotting graves with whitewashed tombstones” vividly paints for us a picture of hypocrisy. Cemeteries are actually quite tranquil and beautiful on the surface. There are flowers, statues, and beautiful memorials to those that have died. But beneath the surface there are rotting bodies.

Does your icing match your cupcake?

  • How much time do you spend getting ready to leave the house in the morning?
  • Do you take time to shower, comb your hair, and spend a little time in front of the mirror to make sure you are presentable to the world?
  • Do you spend as much time daily nurturing your inner spirit through Bible Study and prayer as you do on your external appearances?
  • Do you sometimes find yourself putting on a facade, a mask, pretending to be more “spiritual” so people will be impressed with you?

It’s not that we should not care about our external appearances. In fact we should be concerned about both our internal and external life that we present to the world. Our lives need to reflect the goodness of God both inwardly and outwardly, in our heart attitudes, and in our actions that everyone sees.

Closing Application
Take a little more time preparing your heart each day to get right with God and reflect his heart. Make sure you spend some time with God so that you reflect the goodness of God inside and out before you ice it for all the world to see?

Scripture References

  • Matthew 23:27-28
  • Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. (1 Peter 3: 3-4)
  • Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16: 7)

Wile E Coyote

Wile-E-Coyote.jpg

To this day, one of my favorite cartoons is the Warner Bros “Road Runner” series. Some days I feel like the Road Runner and some days I feel like the Coyote.

Wile E. Coyote (Carnivorous Vulgaris) is based upon a description of a coyote in Mark Twain’s book “Roughing It” which refers to a coyote as being starved and hungry enough to chase a roadrunner.

Road Runner (Accelleratii Incredibus), based upon a bird from the American Southwest, is too fast to catch and too skinny to make a decent meal. He seems completely oblivious to his danger and always escapes the clever Coyote’s carefully orchestrated plans.

According to Chuck Jones, the cartoon’s creator, in “Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of An Animated Cartoonist,” they adhered to some simple but strict rules with the cartoon:

  1. The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going “Beep-Beep!”
  2. No outside force can harm the Coyote – only his own ineptitude or the failure of Acme products.
  3. The Coyote could stop anytime – if he were not a fanatic.
  4. No dialogue ever, except “Beep-Beep!”
  5. The Road Runner must stay on the road.
  6. All action must be confined to the southwest American desert.
  7. All materials, tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from the Acme Corporation.
  8. Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote’s greatest enemy.
  9. The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures.
  10. The audience’s sympathy must remain with the Coyote.

The coyote, with knife and fork in hand, becomes so single-minded, so fixated on his pursuit of Road Runner that his whole existence is defined by it. To make matters worse, he has an exaggerated belief in his own ingenuity and in the scientific methods and instruments of the ACME Corporation. He’s forever coming up with increasingly elaborate and seemingly foolproof schemes in his ceaseless pursuit of the Road Runner.

Amusingly, Murphy’s Law, “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and at the worst possible moment” seems to intervene on every occasion as each attempt to capture the Road Runner fails, by some inherent flaw that Wile E. Coyote never anticipates. All his attempts end in disaster. Yet, nothing happens to Wile E. that he does not bring upon himself. The Road Runner merely responds to coyote’s doomed schemes with his characteristic “Beep-Beep”.

Sadly, if Wile E Coyote ever did catch the Road Runner, it is doubtful that the puny little bird would satisfy his hunger.

Like the Coyote?
Our lives become defined by our pursuits. But many of those pursuits are more difficult to grasp than the Road Runner. We come up with elaborate schemes to satisfy the hungers in life only to be left empty and frustrated by our failures. Too often we like to blame these failures and other misadventures in life on the devil. But like those of Wile E Coyote, most of them are self-initiated. While Coyote’s failures usually do little more than humiliate him, the disastrous consequences of a fall in real life do more than damage our ego. In fact they can cause great harm not only to ourselves, but also to others around us. And even when we do manage to take hold of that which we have been pursuing, the end result is often less than satisfying.

Are there things in life that you fanatically pursue with the reckless abandon of a half-crazed coyote to your detriment? (family, careers, money, power, popularity, etc)

Instead of chasing after the Road Runners in life, let them run off into the sunset and chase after God instead. As the apostle Paul said “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14) “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33) When we pursue God, he will satisfy the hungers we have in life like no Road Runner ever will. Better yet, he wants to be caught!
