Lessons from “Father May I?”

Father May I?

This is a paternal variation of the classic children’s game: Mother, May I?  Use it for Father’s Day or simply to talk about our relationship with the Heavenly Father.

What to do

If you have played the classic game you know that everyone starts out across the room, at an equal distance from mother.  Whoever is mother calls out a person’s name and asks them to take X number of steps forward. If the person steps forward without saying “Mother May I?” he or she is penalised or sent back to the start. However if he or she remembers to say the magic words, mother will reply with directions to take X number of baby steps, ballerina steps, giant steps, scissor steps, spinning steps, crab steps, etc. The first youth to reach mother wins.

Play a variation of the game, where the children or youth don’t ask mother, but instead ask “Father May I?”

Discussion

  • Who make the decisions in your house? Father or mother?
  • On what basis do parents make their decisions?
  • What are the possible consequences of making decisions on our own with guidance from parents?

Take it to the Next Level

Make it Spiritual

How is this game similar to walking with God? In the Bible, the word “walk” is often used to describe our relationship with the Heavenly Father. We don’t stand still nor does God intend for us to go backwards. Sometimes God may ask us to take baby steps, and other times we may need to take a leap of faith. Just like the game, the outcome is a result of our paying attention to God’s instructions and seeking permission before we move.

Make it Practical
In our relationship with the Heavenly Father, if we move without asking first, we may misstep, go in the wrong directions, or experience other unwanted consequences which take us away from the Father. Instead of moving nearer we end up farther away. We draw closer to God when we learn to listen to Him and seek his permission before we move.  Then the actions we take will bring us closer to Him!

Make it Personal

  • What step is God asking you to take today?
  • Does it feel like a baby or giant step?
  • Are you seeking God’s voice, in the direction you are taking in life?
  • How can you become more attentive to his voice and his guidance?
  • What is an area of your life you need to seek God’s permission and guidance in?

Scripture
My sheep recognize my voice; I know them, and they follow me. – John 10:27 (NIV)

God as Father
“But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. – Galatians 4:4-7

God’s Embroidery – What’s your Perspective?

Many times our lives seem like a mess and it’s often our mothers who come to our rescue. We don’t always see the wisdom in the things they tell us to do and sometimes we think that we’re smarter than they are. But we often forget that many times, they see life through the lens of their rich life experiences. Often, it is only later, when we look back, that we appreciate their wisdom and guidance. What is true of mothers, is even more true of God.

God’s Embroidery – An illustration

When I was a little boy, my mother used to embroider a great deal. I would sit at her knee and look up from the floor and ask what she was doing. She informed me that she was embroidering. I told her that it looked like a mess from where I was. As from the underside I watched her work within the boundaries of the little round hoop that she held in her hand, I complained to her that it sure looked messy from where I sat. She would smile at me, look down and gently say, “My son, you go about your playing for a while, and when I am finished with my embroidering, I will put you on my knee and let you see it from my side.”

I would wonder why she was using some dark threads along with the bright ones and why they seemed so jumbled from my view. A few minutes would pass and then I would hear Mother’s voice say, “Son, come and sit on my knee.”

This I did only to be surprised and thrilled to see a beautiful flower or a sunset. I could not believe it, because from underneath it looked so messy.

Then Mother would say to me, “My son, from underneath it did look messy and jumbled, but you did not realize that there was a pre-drawn plan on the top. It was a design. I was only following it. Now look at it from my side and you will see what I was doing.”

Many times through the years I have looked up to my Heavenly Father and said, “Father, what are You doing?” He has answered, “I am embroidering your life.” I say, “But it looks like a mess to me. It seems so jumbled. The threads seem so dark. Why can’t they all be bright?”

The Father seems to tell me, “‘My child, you go about your business of doing My business, and one day I will bring you to Heaven and put you on My knee and you will see the plan from My side.”

A Learning Activity

  1. Ask the youth to imagine a big clock on the ceiling, the kind with hands on it.
  2. Ask the youth to then imagine the second hand moving around the clock in a clockwise direction.
  3. Ask everyone to reach out their hand and finger and point at the clock, and move their hands in a circle in the same direction the clock hand would be moving. (Demonstrate this for the group to see)
  4. Ask the youth to slowly lower their hand and finger to chest level, all the time still pointing at the celing and rotating their hand in the same direction.
  5. Now ask them to look at their finger and to tell you if their finger is rotating clockwise or counterclockwise?
  6. The answer: counterclockwise!

  • What lessons from your Mom or from the Bible now make sense because you have a different perspective?
  • What are some ways in which God has a different perspective from us?

  • Maybe there are some things in life that you don’t understand now. Maybe there are some things that look messy and without a plan. What is an area of your life where you need to trust in God’s perspective on things?
  • Take a moment this week to thank God for having a plan for your life, and working things out for your good.
  • Take a moment this week to thank your mother for also having a plan to raise you well and to help you to have the best things in life, for having faith in you and putting all those things in place so that one day you might be amazed and delighted at God’s plan for you.

Youth 10 Commandments for Raising Good Parents

Parenting isn’t easy. There’s no all inclusive instruction manual for each youth that parents can simply open up and know what the correct actions, responses, and verbal responses are best for ideal relationships with their children. Because of this parents need guidance from their teenagers. Here are some effective strategies for teens who want to raise good parents:

  1. Help parents understand you.
Show them the real you. Share your struggles and your triumphs. Be honest about your feelings. Share what you’re thinking about. Let them know the things you like, the things that you don’t like, and the things that you want to experience. Share the things you discover about yourself and about life. Also share with them when something changes. A change of tastes, of thinking, or of behavior may not always be obvious to even those who you best. Parents are sometimes so busy with other responsibilities that they may not notice that something has changed. Give your parents time to adjust to the changes in your life and the person you are becoming and also to grow alongside you as you mature and grow. Parents don’t always realize that you aren’t a perfect kid. Sometimes you have to let them know the real you as well as the person you are becoming!
  2. Try to Understand your parents.
Ask questions when you don’t understand. Sometimes parents have a hard time saying what they really mean. And when they do say something, listen to them. They are usually much more exciting than teachers and they care much more about you!  This also teaches your parents how to talk. If you aren’t careful they will forget how to talk.
  3. Treat your parents the way you want to be treated.
You may be a child, but parents are God’s children. God will discipline them if they step out of line. Remember that parents are people too. They have their own needs, their own struggles, and their own feelings. While you are very important to them, you are not the only thing in their lives. They have work, responsibilities, and their own relationships too. Give the same unconditional love that God gives to all of us. Parents aren’t perfect, and they will make mistakes, just as every other person does – yourself included. Be willing to forgive and to love them in spite of their mistakes and human flaws. Give honest answers to questions. Parents somehow seem to have the whole world bugged and find the truth anyway. This helps keep your parents from sneaking around without your supervision.
  4. Set a good example for your parents
Staying away from alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and pre-marital sex. Parents tend to copy the language, styles, and tastes of the young as it makes them feel young again. The example you set for your parents is very important. Also, be careful so that your room is clean and sets a good example. Never, ever do anything to betray your parents’ trust in you. When your parents lose trust in you, you wind up losing much more than just trust! Put your parents before yourself. Let them know that they are important to someone!
  5. Spend time with your parents experiencing life together.
Say “yes” when they ask you to do something together with them. Let them know you are not ashamed to be with them. You will be surprised how important it makes them feel when you want to do something with them. This also gives them opportunities to learn to be a better parent.
  6. Encourage your parents.
Sometimes parents get depressed, confused and hesitant. They need encouragement! Appreciate the things they do right. Parents need to know when they are doing a good job. It’s always easy to notice things a person is not doing right, but it takes special effort to appreciate the things they do right instead of taking them for granted. Instead of focusing on the negatives, celebrate the positives once in a while. Compliment them on a great meal, for great advice, or for specific things that they do that you appreciate. Better yet, write it in a small note. Everyone likes to be appreciated for a job well done and it also helps let them know the things that matter to you in the relationship. Praise also makes people want to do even better. Brag about your parents once in a while. Let them know you are proud of them!
  7. Talk to your parents the way you want them to talk to you.
Be careful with your tone and avoid accusations and whining. Avoid raising your voice to your parents at any time—One sure way to start an argument with misunderstandings and hurt feelings is to raise your voice during a discussion. Share how YOU feel about situations rather than what they DID in the situation. And if you really need to talk about something, ask politely if they can give you a few minutes to discuss something that is important to you. If they are busy, set a time when you can talk. There was a time in your life, as a child, when you told your parents everything. Now they have to do a lot of guesswork unless you take time to let them know what’s happening in your life and what is important to you. Two-way communication is important to any relationship.
  8. Pray for your parents.
They really need your prayers. Parents need divine wisdom. They also have needs of their own. It is often hard to balance the stress of their personal lives and of work with the daily responsibilities as a parent. Let God change your parent’s minds; that’s His job, not yours. He’s been raising parents for a very long time. The older you get, the harder it is to change. Let God do any changing that needs to be done and you just love them as they are and pray they grow up to be good parents.
  9. Take good care of your parents.
Be concerned about the outside activities of your parents. Insist that they bring their friends home so you can meet them. Be sure they get to bed at a reasonable hour, especially on weeknights. Wouldn’t want them to burn themselves out would you? Also makes things much nicer in the morning if everyone has had some good sleep. Carefully watch your parents activities in the home. The effects of television on adults isn’t the best these days. Daytime soap operas are much too strong for most mothers and dad’s may not be able to handle all the violence, sex and bad language on late night shows, especially after a hard day’s work. You also don’t want them to pick up bad language. At least once a week do something nice for your parents. The key is to do something before they ask. You’d be surprised at the results and the crazy looks they get on their faces.
  10. Don’t be too strict with your parents. Allow them to have some access to the phone, the stereo and the car once in a while. Let your parents have their own way sometimes, especially with the little things. If you show you are willing to give in sometimes, they are more likely to cooperate when it is a big deal for you. Choose your battles. While it may be tempting to fight at every opportunity, not everything is the end of the world. Let them win a fight once in a while. Then when you need to discuss the really serious things, they will take you more seriously. Also realize that there are some rules, that if you provide a good argument may be negotiable and there are others that have no chance of a change.  Take the first steps to remedy problems. Sometime parents may not realize that there is a problem.

If you do all these things you are more likely to raise good parents!

The Nature of God

We were recently very blessed in church when we got the opportunity to meet and worship with the writer of the praise song “Jesus Shall Take the Highest Honor.” It really opened our eyes and hearts to the magnificence of God and we saw a glimpse of what a big and indescribable God He truly is.

When we think about God, it really blows our minds. There’s so many things to say about Him, many things about His character that we still don’t understand. This activity helps youth at least gain some perspective on the personhood of God and relate to Him in ways they can describe and (at least try to) identify with.

The Nature of God

Resources

  1. Balloons
  2. Newsprint or a large sheets of paper
  3. Markers for youth to write on the balloons and also to write on the newsprint

Preparation

  • To speed up the activity you can inflate the balloons in advance.

What to Do

  1. Divide the youth into small groups and give each group a marker and some newsprint.
  2. Individual groups brainstorm attributes of God and list their ideas on newsprint.
  3. Groups share their answers and vote on 5 most important attributes from the collective ideas of all the youth.
  4. Write the attributes of God on the inflated Balloons and place them in the center of the classroom.
  5. Have the youth group stand in a circle around the balloons. For larger youth groups split into 2 or more circles.
  6. Toss the balloons into the air. The youth must keep all the balloons in the air at once.
  7. If a balloon hits the floor, everything stops and the youth must discuss what God would be like without the attribute that touched the floor.
  8. If the same balloon hits the floor more than once, the youth must discuss one of the attributes on a balloon that has not been discussed yet.
  9. Once all the attributes have been discussed, have everyone take a seat and get out their Bibles.
  10. Share a few of the verses on the attributes of God. (Unless you have a lot of time, limit discussion to 3-5 attributes, but mention some of the others)
  11. Discuss how the attributes affect our relationship with God.

Variations

  • Replace the word “God” in the instructions above with “friend” for a lesson on the qualities of a friend.
  • Attributes of the Church (Christians)
  • Attributes of a Good father / Good Mother
  • Attributes of a Christian
  • Attributes of a missionary / evangelist
  • Attributes of Christ
  • Attributes of the Holy Spirit

Make it Personal

  • What attributes of God comfort you? Make you fearful?
  • How are the attributes of God revealed in his dealing with us?
  • Share a situation when you personally experienced one of the attributes of God. How did it make you feel? What effect did it have on your relationship with God, with others, or on the way you live your life?
  • What attributes of God should we also display in our words, thoughts, and actions?

Make it Practical

We are called not only to seek God and worship him, but also to be like him. While there are some attributes of God we can never have, there are other attributes of God that we are told to express in our lives as Christians. (Eph. 4:24, Colossians 3:10, leviticus 11:44, 2 Corinthians 3:18, Romans 8:28-29, 1 John 3:2)

  • Which characteristics of God should do you need to express more in your life? Which is most difficult for you?
  • What can you start doing now that can help it to happen?

With all the awesome attributes of God, it may seem that God is out of reach. It’s hard to imagine that God should take an interest in us. But our awesome God can be found if we seek Him.

Close with a time of praise to God for who he is and for how he relates to us.

Fathers Are a Gift from God

Fathers are a voice of wisdom.

Icebreaker Game Idea: Who am I and where is my Father
Write the name of each Male (father) and the matching animal on separate index cards or name labels. Shuffle them, and as youth arrive one on the back of each youth so that each person cannot see his own card. The youth must mingle around the room asking each other “yes” or “no” questions about the animal on his or her back in order try to not only identify what is on his or her back, but to also find his or her match. Reduce the number of cards for smaller groups. Duplicate some of the animals for larger groups.

Game Idea: Concentration Card Matching Game
You can place the cards face down so that they cannot be seen in several rows on a table. Do not stack the cards. Youth then turn over any two cards. If a father is matched with the correct animal they can take both cards and then choose two more. If the two cards do not go together they must leave the cards in place and turn them back over. Youth takes turns trying to match cards. This can be done in teams or as individuals. At the end of the game when all the cards have been matched and taken, the youth or team with the most cards wins.

Game Idea: Matching Fathers Concentration Card Game
As a variation you can get photos of fathers and the youth. Paste or print each one on a card. Play it in the same way as the game above except the youth must also match father and child together.

Game Idea: “Battle” also known as “slap”
Shuffle and deal the cards into two equal piles. Divide the youth into two teams. Each team chooses a person to turn over cards. Each team turns over a card at the same time as the other team. When the two cards go together the first person to slap the top of the discards in the center gets all those cards. If they slap the stack and the cards do not match, the other team gets all the cards. The team can shout directions for its player and help them to determine when to slap the deck. Once the deck has been slapped, the next person from each team turns over the cards. The game is over when one team obtains all the cards in this manner.

Father – Child Game Idea
Have each child bring a stuffed animal. Put all the stuffed animals in a pile. Then one by one each father is blindfolded and must find his child’s stuffed animal without looking!

Game Idea: “Name That Animal”
In this variation, youth get to see animal listed on the card, but must make the sound of the animal to find their match. Have dictionaries available as some youth will not know what their animal is. Make sure that there are not duplicate names of fathers as some of the names of the males are the same for different animals.

Game Idea: Which one is my daddy?
Blindfold youth the youth and line up the fathers in a row of chairs. Each youth must find his or her father using only touch. You could guide them to touch the father’s face, or the fathers could hold out their arms, or you could use a hand, a foot, or a leg for identification. You could also do it the other way around so that fathers are blindfolder and must identify their children by touch. The story of jacob and Esau in the Genesis 25 of the Bible would be a great follow up as Isaac wasn’t able to identify which son was which.

Take it to the Next Level
Each animal in this list has a special name for its father. Your parents gave each of you a special name as well. And God knows each one of you by name. Just as the parents take care of their babies, your father takes care of you. Take some time to thank your father for taking care of you.

  • What are some of the unique characteristics of your father?
  • What are some of the things that would help you identify your father if you could not see?
  • What are some of the phrases and words your father often uses?
  • What are some ways that your father takes care of you?
  • What are some things that you treasure about your father?
  • In what ways has your father blessed you?

You can then ask the same questions, but in regard to our heavenly father.

Responsibilities of Fathers

Scripture has many passages on the family relationship, and of fathers and children.  Here are a few of the responsibilities of fathers mentioned in the Bible:

  • Provide for his family (Matthew 7:9-1; 1 Timothy 5:8)
  • Instruct his children (Proverbs 1:8)
  • Exhort, encourage and implore children (1 Thessalonians 2:11)
  • Punish unruly children (Deuteronomy 21:18-21)
  • Raise the children in the discipline and nurture of the Lord without provoking them or exasperating them causing them to lose heart (Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21)
  • Discipline his children (Hebrews 12:7)
  • Love his wife (Ephesians 5:25,28,33)

Thank You God for My Dad

Dear God,

Thanks for giving me a daddy. You knew just what I’d need! In case you need to make daddies for other kids, I thought you might like to know what I like best about the one you sent me:

A good dad …

  1. knows everything (like how to tie shoes and drive a car)
  2. is really smart (he even knows where the wind goes after it blows through the trees)
  3. has a forgiving heart (for when I mess up)
  4. is loaded with patience, patience, patience (he probably won’t need it, but just in case…)
  5. has a comfy lap and a big laugh (you understand about that, don’t you?)
  6. tells me all about you and your son.

Your friend,

A Kid

P.S. I almost left out the best part! A good dad has real strong arms (to catch me when I fall. He says you’re just like that, too.)
